I wrote this for my parents' 50th Anniversary in 1998. Good exercise in writing a song from others' perspective. While the tune is original, some of the chording was borrowed (sloppily) from Jim Croche's "Operator".
lyrics
Fifty Years Ago
Mordewis Gaeafbran ap Llys
Fifty years ago, I was in my uniform
Looking in your eyes, they never seemed so beautiful before
So large and warm
Your face, your form
I didn't know I wanted so much, fifty years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, fifty years ago
Fifty years ago, when my father handed me
Into your strong hands, I thought you were the gentlest man I'd known
To be so kind
The date was blind
I didn't know I wanted so much, fifty years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, fifty years ago
Forty years ago, while our sons were growing,
Life was very hard, but still our love was showing that we cared
A house and yard,
I worked so hard
But you were still so beautiful, forty years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, forty years ago
Forty years ago, the children were out learning
Keeping up our home, and now our love was yearning for some time
To be alone
Our Faith had grown
And I was so in love with you, forty years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, forty years ago
Thirty years ago, our older son had left us
All our many friends and faith in God had kept us feeling strong
We had our days
We found a way
And I was still so close to you, thirty years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, thirty years ago
Thirty years ago, nothing seemed to matter
Many of our plans simply turned to water in our hands
But I held on
We still had one
And I was even closer to you, thirty years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, thirty years ago.
Fifteen years ago, when my body faltered
It was touch and go, but you were always right there by my side
And I survived
Your eyes alive
My heart was healing in your hands, fifteen years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, fifteen years ago
Fifteen years ago, when your heart was breaking
Holding our son close, I think that I have never prayed so hard
Our friends were there
God heard our prayers
I never knew I needed so much, fifteen years ago
I never knew I loved you so much, fifteen years ago
Fifty years have gone, I look upon your beauty
Through the years, we've grown, never feeling duty was a bond
That dream of home
A place I've known with you
I've had the life I wanted fifty years ago
I never knew you'd be this beautiful, fifty years ago
I always knew I'd love you so much, fifty years ago
Fifty years ago

This is my favorite album so far. I don't think I've ever felt as seen as when listening to "Mermaids and Queers." "Slytherins and Misunderstood" finally convinced my mom to embrace her Slytherin identity! loquita08
